Quick Chat with DJ Pete Crow | DJ Tom McBride's Top 10 | Living 4

Hello kids! I hope you all enjoyed your Thanksgiving dinners and parties therein.  I am recovering from illness as I write, so this week's column is going to be somewhat brief. (If I find out which one of you gave me the damn flu, I'm going to beat you like a red headed step-child!)  My Children of the night report that international DJ Steve Lawler was off the hook at Transit on November 21st.  Many boys and gals report back that this was the place to be.  SOOOOO, did we all get to hear Frankie Knuckles throw down on Thanksgiving night? I was holding down the fort at Felt that evening so I missed out. Sources say it was all the Frankie we have come to love over the years. Stopped in Roscoe's on Friday Nov. 29th for a cocktail to find they were hosting a CD release party for Maria Carey's new album "Charmbracelet".  Ralphi Rosario @ Hunters on Nov. 30th?  Yes, it was true.  La Brinca gave the suburbs a dose of city living with his sounds abound.  Hats off to Box Boy Rich, Deb,

Sauci Bernaise (right) and the GLEE crew for their December 1st Communi-T.  Mike Serafini opened with Mark Vallese tearing down the house for the rest of the evening.  Kudos for bringing everyone together for this event.  Returning to the turntables for a guest spot at Crobar on December 6th were Chicago heavy hitters Teri Bristol and DJ Psycho Bitch.  This promises to be a fun Hard House event for the kiddies of the night.  Monday Monday………so good to me:  Catch Eric Hernandez delivering all the retro love we can handle at Jackhammer on Mondays.  (Go Go boys and music from the 70's 80's and 90's….gotta love that!)  For those into the deeper sound, check out Felt's new Monday venture called Texture. Host Mark M. & Bartendress Nick serve up sounds from the San Francisco House scene.

Also from the files of STILL CRAZY AFTER ALL THESE YEARS - Red Dog on Mondays going strong almost 12 years now with the sounds of Lego and Mark Grant. Tuesdays gives us Testosterone @ Berlin with Ralphi Rosario (a staple in the diet of nightcrawlers everywhere).  We can't get enough of the Jungle lately.  Jorge Suarez has been swinging from every vine in town as of late with gigs at Club 930, Charlie's on Wednesdays, Steamworks on Fridays (AKA the Trance Sister), and Spin on Saturdays.  Speaking of Spin, Fridays are quickly becoming the sexy thang with their Shower Contests & music slinger Timmy Loop.

A triad of night club powers combine to bring Chicago the Phoenix Night Life series of dance events.  Circuit, Metro, and Excalibur are collectively sponsoring these gigs with the first in the series being played by Chicago remixer/producer Mark Picciotti @ Metro on December 14th . DJ Tom McBride throws down the fierce T-dance sounds on December 15th as Phoenix moves to Excalibur for the second part of this event.

quick chat w/dj pete crow

Where do you currently play?

I currently play at the Manhole on Tuesday nights and the third Saturday of the month. I also will be plying Crobar two Sundays a month. My next special event will be In Miami at Crobar on Sunday for New Years weekend.

How long have you been a DJ?

Six years -- three of them in clubs.

What was your first gig ever?

My first gig was a T-Dance at Crobar for seven hours!

How would you describe your style?

Oh boy, I play a wide mixture of music but love to play sexy tribal and progressive house.

What is one of your favorite labels?

*69 and Sondos have been on a roll lately. I like a lot of the smaller labels, too. For remixers I like Victor Calderone, Peter Rauhofer, Ralphie, Danny Tenaglia, Murk, Superchumbo, D. Ramirez, and Dr. Kucho and Wally.

Christina aguilera's new CD Stripped is making waves with her new single "Dirrty" (yes, that's with 2 R's) on RCA records.  Tracey Young slices and dices this single for the club children. - quite cute.  Dee Roberts has remade one of my favorite club cuts of all time - Brazen (Weep).  Calle delivers a tribal mix of this classic that is simply off the hook.  Mad'House out of the UK has released Absolutely Mad, a Madonna tribute album on Radical records.  Mike Cruz has a new cut entitled "Noah's Organ" on Cutting Edge records.  This is a fun cut with a very Cruz N' Bagz sound to it.  The Cooler Kidz release "All Around the World" on Hallucination records. Slice up on this tune done by Hex Hector and Dj Monk.  Oliver Lieb AKA the Snakeman put out "Afrika" on Yoshitoshi records.  Saheed & Palesh stomp a bangin' mix of this limited edition release.  Right now it seems the only place to buy this track is at Yoshitoshi.com.  Oscar G is on fire lately and proves to continue is streak of success with a new cut on Future Groove records called "Space".  Released in parts I and II, mixes are hand crafted by Oscar, Low End Specialists, Tony Thomas and Chus & Ceballos.  If I were to have a Living 4 pick of the week, this would be it.  This song has more funk than the leather room at Steamworks. Sarah Whatmore's "When I Lost You" comes to us through BMG music this week also. K-Klass & Flatlines throw wicked sounds to vinyl for this import release.  DJ Disciple venerates blessings of the funky kind to the Chi-children with his new release "YES"  -  Sins absolved courtesy of Lee Cabrera (a fierce dub).  Hakan Lidbo released a tune a  couple of months ago called "Bad Girls Go To Hell".  I finally picked this one up and it's quite that way!!!  Phunk Investigation sends the gals to Satan with their mixing skills on this cut.  WOW, with all this talk of hell and disciples and such, I need to go find a priest and make sure he punishes me!!!COUGH !!HACK! - time to get my Vicks inhaler.  ENJOY YOUR HOLIDAYS EVERYONE………AND DANCE LIKE NO ONE'S WATCHING!!!

reviews

Toni Braxton (feat. Loon) "Hit The Freeway" Arista Records
While not geared for the peak hour set, Toni's first ride from her new album, "More Than A Woman", will be heard on many dance floors with Hex Hector in the driver's seat. Hex steers this rhythmic track through a groovy bassline peppered with percussive beats to rev it up a notch, giving the song just enough gas for a steady pace with a strong finish. The Pound Boys provide an alternate route for those who limit their speed to 125bpm.-
DJ Greg Drescher

Mariah Carey "Through The Rain" Monarc Music / Island Records
Mariah's career forecast is brighter after listening to this first release off her upcoming "Charmbracelet" album, receiving diva treatment from the master of anthems, Hex Hector. Hex builds a stormy 12-minute mix in his signature fashion, accentuating Mariah's vocals during drops which flow into haunting builds that unleash the song's full power in an intense hurricane of sound. Other versions include Full Intention's funky mix and light sprinkles by Boris & Michis and Maurice Joshua. -
DJ Greg Drescher

Drive Feat. Marvel "The Music Lifts Me" is JellyBean Record's latest release. Guido tosses up mixes that are off the hook. (You may remember this tune from over the summer as a pre-release.) The main vocal is cute and steamy.  The Tribal mix is SICKENING with Guido's signature bassline over deep tribal madness. With lyrics like "Ain't no bump, ain't no pill….make me wanna feel!!", this record is a must have. GRADE A+  -  Eterno

New-comer Becky Baeling's single "If You Love Me" (Universal Records) gets the once- over from Mac Quale.  And does she work it: Q's Beg For It Dub is sexy tribal but deeper in nature than his normal collaboration efforts. Quayle and Tony Moran collaborate for the vocal mix which, quite honestly, misses the mark. Q's dub is hot and speaks volumes for this fun release. Grade B+ -Eterno

Boomkat's "The Wreckoning" on Dreamworks records gives listeners mainstream remixes to please the palettes of dance, including Thunderpuss & DJ Monk  If you adore the standard Cox & Harris fanfare then this release is for you! If you like break-beats, then go with DJ Monk's mix.  If you like more flavor in your soup, then stay away all together.  Again, if you like to play it safe then this release is cute.  For the daring minded, this is a bland dish.  GRADE C - Eterno
