It is with a tear in my eye that I report
the closing of a Halsted St. staple. The
closing party/ GLEE club reunion party was
May 4th for
Manhole and lasted 3 days with guest
spots by
Jim Lewis,
Ralphi Rosario and
Teri Bristol. Children, MZ Kii Kii remembers
when that space was Christopher St. The grit
of the bar and the funny street sign logos
put up on the corner of Cornelia and Halsted
for the whole world to see definitely did
add spice over the years. You will be
missed, Mangina ! Mark Liberson (UR
Magazine) is the new owner and plans to
re-open the space as a lounge club with a
dance floor called Hydrate (www.hydratechicago.com).
Which one of Halsted St's more tangible bars
recently lost almost all of its staff? Down
to only one bartender and a bar back on some
nights we hear they will be hiring soon.

your own take on Manhole/Hydrate) |

Friday April 18th brought West Coast DJ Marques
Wyatt to Smartbar with an opening set by DJ Dayhota.
A fun mix of str8, gay, gals, and other
unidentifiable beings made the night WAY WAY CUTE!!
Darren Emerson of the group Underworld spun a fierce
set April 24th at Transit. April 25th brought
Timo Maas to
House
of Blues to tear up the children of the
night…..and he succeeded. I've never heard Timo
live, but he impressed me. Normally I don't like to
credit straight club crowds for much, but I'll tell
you, they carry the dance floor energy that gay
dance floors have lost. They cheer when they hear
songs they like. They …….dare I say it…..smile and
actually look like they are enjoy themselves. I
can't remember the last time I heard boyz hoot for a
song they liked at the club. Hats off to Pure for
Timo's appearance. April 26th gave us White Party
(Palm Springs) regular Kimberly S. at
Circuit and House
standard Miles Maeda at
Smartbar. Kimberly was cute and worked the boyz,
naturally, while Miles let the house-heads have it
up and down the dancefloor. Also on that night,
Funky Buddha Lounge delivered its classic "Pimps
and Ho's" party part 3.
Gramaphone Records' "Default One" party was a
success on May 3rd at the Metro. I got my head
chewed off because I accidentally listed the ticket
price for the Default party in this column as "11$"
at the door. Well, it was actually 25$ at the door
and you know the queens let me have it! The Heart's
Foundation showed their appreciation back on April
27th with a party at Domaine spun by
Ralphi Rosario and
Teri Bristol. The house was full and fun was had
by all. |

Gone but NEVER forgotten:
Miss Amy Armstrong sang her last with the
Voltaire troop back on April 26th. There was many a
teary eye in the house that night. She is moving on
to greener pastures. We will miss you, Amy!! Where
is the man on the box? Stopping into
Cell Block
recently I spotted Box Boy Rich behind the bar
serving libations of the leather kind. He's there
Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Rumors of
possible T dances at Cellblock? Rumors of a new
Sunday gay happening at Circus (no, not
Circuit)? Stay
tuned for more. Cherry Red on Sheffield……been there
yet? Crawl out of your shell and experience it kids.
For those who don't venture out much, Saturday
nights on radio station 88.7FM you can hear DJ Shani
Herbert's radio show "Groove Temple" as part of the
"Gotta have house music" movement. She's had many
guest DJ's from Keith Ware to DJ Glen so you know
the show has musical variety. Tune in and enjoy. |

Do
you like to munch? Food, that is.
1492 Tapas Bar has opened down on Superior &
Rush and the cuisine is way Spanish, way cute, and
way proper. Dress nice or you'll be eatin' cheetos
from the 99cent rack! What's next for the Babes in
Boyland? Memorial Day approaches with DJ Mark
Anthony doing the IML tea dance at Excalibur on May
25th and Susan Morabito doing the "Slap Leather"
party at the same venue the next day. And waaaaaayyy
down the line, Mariah Carey will be belting it out
at the United Center on July 29th. Well, that's it
for now kids, and remember to douche properly! |

Change is good. Variety is the spice of life. If you
believe that bullshit, then there is this bridge I'd
like to sell you. Honestly though, to keep things
fresh and different I'm going to be putting away the
"quick chat" and "living 4" segments for a while.
They will be replaced with you local favorite DJ's
current top 10 dance lists and top 10 dance lists of
all time. |

For now, we'll school you on the new: From Spiritual
Vibe is a track called "A Gosar" on RPO Traxx
records. RPO stands for Rick Pierre O'Neil, who is a
tribal remixer out of France (from what they tell
me) and he's now got his own label which is
releasing some wicked tracks. Remixer Nordy Cotto
has been letting us have it recently. At the end of
last year he released the E-funk E.P. Within the
past 2 months he's given us remixes for Anastasia
(Love Is A Crime……they're better than the
Thunderputz mixes), Lisa Stansfield (All Around The
Word 2003) and most recently Jude featuring Hope's
"You Mean The World To Me"(Cutting records). For
those not familiar with Nordy or his style, pick one
of these track up for a listen. He's from Todd
Terry's camp of remixers. Miguel Migs fans can now
pick up his 2nd edition to the Dubplate Sessions on
NRK records. The sessions 2 release is a lot of fun,
but pick it up quickly because only 3000 copies
worldwide are being pressed. Not to fret though, if
you can't pick it up at the record store just go to
your local neighborhood internet download thief and
I'm sure he'll steal you a copy for free. |

Watch for the new Masters At Work mixes of Billie
Ray Cyrus' "Achy Breaky Heart 2003". They're fierce.
Peter Rauhofer just finished his new mixes of The
Carpenter's "We've Only Just Begun". Karen's voice
never sounded so…….thin. Hex Hector hands the
children a complete retouch of Air Supply's "I'm All
Out of Love" - Hex's "out of it" mix is very that
way. Angelo Kortez breathes new life into the
Barbara Streisand/Donna Summer classic "Enough is
Enough". No release date set on these yet, but his
"enough already!" mix and "you're boring me to
tears" mix are tribal fun. Mz Vaquez has re-trimmed
Quiet Riot's "Cum On Feel The Noise", with his Cum
On My Earth mix. It's very earthy. And lastly from
the oldies shelf, the Rosabel mixes of "It Was A
Very Good Year" by Frank Sinatra are supposedly out
and about.(I heard Victor Calderone has this one on
his website playlist) Hot Hot Hot! |
|
Defected records just pressed out the Olav Basoski
mixes of Michelle Week's "The Light". I can see why
they held out on these; they are the best of the
bunch. DeLoren & Colors throw us "Alessa" on Stereo
records. Produced by DJ Chus, listen for the
Iberican Tribal mix. Johnny King's E.P. Kingstuff 1
on Work White records gives us house with a snappy
twist on it. The strongest cut off this E.P. is
"Notice Me". BeatFreak records recently released
"The Death of My Soul" by Dimas & Martinez. This
tune is hot and has been getting play by big names
such as Timo Mass and Roger Sanchez in their DJ
sets. The Murk boys are back again with their follow
up to "Dark Beat". It's called "Alright". The
original doesn't sound too different from DB, while
the Southside Drum mix is very Miami and very Murk.
3 beat music brings new comer Tim Scott's release
"Funk Sol Disco Tek" to the masses. Tim is part of
the Freeloader remix team and his first solo release
is cute, with tribal inflections and progressive
sounds. My personal pick of the week is Bass &
Penn's "Communicate" on Urbana Records. Remixes by
Chus (he's on fire lately) make this a banging
afterhours anthem that won't be going away anytime
soon. India has a new cut on the block called
"Seduce Me Now (Seduceme!)" it's on Jellybean
records, and the remixers are all Chicago babies.
Georgie Porgie, Todd Minor, Terry Hunter, and Teri
Bristol all deliver mixes for this track which is
already charting in the Billboard arena. Chus &
Ceballos (ok, it's the last time I mention him in
this column) remix Antoine Clamaran & LuLu Hughes'
"Release Yourself" on Filtered Records. This is a
smooth cut from the boys of Spain and should be
commercially available by the time this music page
runs to press. |

Def Mix is Back! DJ Pierre VS
David Morales hand the masses "Make It Hot" on
Definity Records. DJ Pierre's mix is slightly
more progressive, with deeper sounds and a flowing
beat. Morales'mix, which has a sexy tribal feel,
gives us deep beats that make you bounce as the
singer demands "Hey DJ! Make It Hot!" - CE |

As she graced Boi's last cover, Madonna's
"American Life" (Maverick) finally comes with dance
mixes for all tastes. For those on the house tip
check out Felix Da Housecat's slice up. If you're
into Hip-Hop Missy Elliot delivers a redux and
lastly, for the boyz Peter Rauhofer gives listeners
a part 1 and 2 from which to choose. Something for
everyone! - CE |

Meat Katie's new cut "K-Hole"
is another example why SAW records is one of the
best domestic progressive labels. The original
mix has a haunting industrial feel to it, while the
Elite Force mix has a slight break-beat sound.
Circuit sissies beware: the mixes are definitely NOT
cream and sugar sounding. Those who like their
coffee darker will like this cut. -CE

Becky Baeling's follow up to
"If You Love Me' is called " Getaway " on Universal
Records. The first release has mixes from Mike
Rizzo and Dave Aude. Rizzo's mix and dub are very
pop/mainstream oriented with a snappy flavor.
Becky's beautiful vocals shine through. Aude's mix
is more uptempo on the trance side. The mixes
guarantee another hit for Baeling. - CE |
