Quick Chat with DJ Freddie Bain | DJ Jeremy's Top 10 | Living 4

scene and be seen

by Kii Kii DiGregorio

SPRING HAS SPRUNG!!! Say that ten times real fast. I hope everyone is enjoying the warm weather that is upon us, and the eye candy that goes with it. MZ Kii Kii stopped down at Vision on April 5th to find Saeed & Palesh from D.C. on the decks spinning the crowd into a TIZZY. They have a swinging couch that I simply LOVE. Back on Tuesday April 8th, after a long night of rubbing elbows with the social elite, I hopped in my limo and headed to Charlie's……only to find the doors SHUDDERED at 230 A.M. Annoyed, I hopped back in the limo and spun it around to Rehab……..only to find them closed too! Aren't these joint 4 A.M. bars? What's up with that!?! I was feeling a bit cultured recently and fluttered over to the Vitam

 Kii Kii

Theater down in Wacky Park on April 13th. Seems they had a really cute show going on called "Seldom Lucky, Seldom Plush". Dancer Jorge provided much visual nutrition in this very cute production.

United Colors of Benetton had their annual fashion show at White Star on April 4th. Elite guested their hunky models for this yummy show. Transit hosted "Who Da Funk" at Transit on April 10th courtesy of Pure Productions. Speaking of Pure, they hosted Laurent Garnier @ Zentra on March 19th. Tan cute, Mammacita! Watch for "Default One" on May 3rd. What is it? Gramaphone Records will be showcasing their best and brightest Techno DJ at the Metro for an evening of music and live performances. Tickets are 11$ at the door. A new venue opening on Southport & Roscoe called SoPo Lounge promises to bring the best of Manhattan flavor to Chicago. Too bad they can't import some of the hotties from Manhattan along with the libations. I previously mentioned Cherry Red opening on Sheffield Ave. and their soulful Sundays. They are now going full tilt apparently with DJ's and events from Wednesday to Sunday.

Up and coming for which to watch: Legendary Timo Maas comes to Chicago's House of Blues on Friday April 25th . This guarantees to be the place to be. Glam finally gets with it by hosting the 2003 Fireball Salute party on April 27th. Opening DJ is Ralphi Rosario with Teri Bristol as the closer. Queer as Folk comes to Chicago--- sort of. As part of the QAF Babylon Tour, DJ Tracey Young hits Circuit NightClub on May 10th. Derrick Carter spins 'Localsound' at Big Wig Club on Division and Ashland on May 1st. Zentra is giving us party heaven with Kenny Dope (Masters At Work) on May 2nd, and Layo & Bushwacka on May 24th. Kisses to Y'all until next time kiddies!

Some new tracks to speak of this issue: Japanese muse Seiko hits the charts this week with her new cut "Just For Tonight" with re-mixes by Chicago's Mark Picchiotti. Stretch & Vern have finally released "Hey" on VC records. This song was originally released as a promo last year but is finally available to the masses. The Cevin Fisher mixes are too cute for words. Crystal Water's "Gypsy Woman" has been fancied up and re-mixed. This 2003 tribal mix is currently only a white label release, but I hope it gets picked up. Singer Kira releases "I'll Be Your Angel" on Logic Records. The Sinesweepers deliver an energetic mix that is quite pleasing. I'm a little late on this release, but if you haven't heard Yoko Ono's "Walking On Thin Ice" you must give it a listen. Re-mixers include Rui DaSilva, Peter Rauhofer, Felix Da Housecat, and Danny Tenaglia. Danny's mix is the cream of this crop. New on Bliss Records is Pete Lazonby's "Wave Speech". Junior Vasquez tosses this salad in a fun way. Madrid's Dr. Kucho gives dance floor divas his new E.P. Shadow Troopers on Disc Doctor Records. YO records, the baby of Yoshitoshi Records, has 2 new releases: Sidekick's "What You Want" and Dave From Dallas's "Come To Me Baby". Sidekick's track is more progressive, while Dave's track has a more tribal feel. Mischa Daniels cuts "Must Be The Difference" on White Work Records. It's House, but with more snap to it. Swain, Snell & Lucas give us "Follow Me" on Rhythm Syndicate records. Fierce re-dux on this track by Wally & Kucho. Singer Maya releases "In The Name Of Love" on Episode Records. Laura Pausani gives us "If That's Love" on Atlantic, with toss-ups by Luca Cassani, Mike Rizzo, DB Boulevard, and Moltosugo. The first release off the Weekend Player's new album is "I'll Be There". The re-mixes by Gabriel & Dresden are already on the Billboard chart.

David Morales teams up with DJ Pierre for "Make It Hot". This steamy number come off of David's Definity Records and is being hyped big time by the Def Mix crew. Bermuda Triangle releases "Mooger Fooger" on Hooj Choons with mixes by Subway. Preliminary results indicate high cuteness levels on this cut. Azuli records will be releasing "Miami 2003", a double CD compilation and tribute to this year's Winter Music Conference. It was mixed by David Piccioni and Vertigo. And lastly, Dot Dot Dot Records has arisen from hibernation with a series of new release to hit stores next month: "For The Music" by Colourful Karma, "House of Stone" by Colonel Abrams (Buddha Morales mixes), and "Standing Strong" by newcomer Christopher Lowman. If you aren't familiar with this label, they are a relatively new creation for the tribal underground crowd. Onto reviews:

HOUSE MUSIC ALL NIGHT LONG! Aaron Ochoa's new CD compilation RELEASE gives your House-heads a different assortment of underground cuts to choose from. The mixing is somewhat tight. We get filter-disco on cuts like Nothing But Good To You by Aaron himself, Jazz-House with Do Ghost Dance by Brett Johnson, and Latin-House with Derrick Carter's If You Wanna Help Me Jesus. Aaron fits all these cuts together without seeming forced or contrived which usually happens when DJ's try to do to much in a 75 minute CD. This compilation works.

Nervous Record's "The Soulful House Experience 2", the follow up to #1, combines Gospel Soul and House in a blend that tastes so sweet. Teddy Douglas from the Basement Boys seamlessly mixes these uplifting and positive songs from Byron Stingley's Testify, Halo's Keep Reaching, to E-Smoove's Brothers & Sisters. This CD will be sure to bring you back to church!

Showing its dance music diversity, Jellybean Records releases a House cut by Jaque' called "Keys Of Life". This is a smooth underground cut with Jaque's exotic vocals layered over Piano filled music. Underground Collective delivers the mixes on this very "Masters At Work" sounding tune. Never having heard of Jaque', I was impressed with this release.
