Quick Chat w/DJ Jim Lewis | Peter Rauhofer's Top 10 | Living 4: Songs We Live For

scene and be seen

by Kii Kii DiGregorio

There isn't much in the world lately to smile about, kids. War is never glamorous or pretty. It becomes difficult to write about social fun in our community. How does one do it without coming across as flippant or ignorant to what is going on overseas? I try to keep in perspective the fact that if we stop having fun because of the war, then in a way…….we've already lost. Whether you are for or against the situation at hand just remember to still have a little levity in your daily lives. Remind yourself that it's still OK to have fun and smile. And let's hope our boys come home soon and safe. With that said: Children, there are two things MZ Kii Kii hates. #1- being told I'm wrong.

 Kii Kii

#2- Actually being wrong. I have corrections to note. I referred last week to "Triple A Meat Market" in my column when the name of the deceased hole in the wall was actually "Double A Meat Market". Kii Kii was only 21 years old when she was forced at gunpoint through the doors of that dive anyway. The other item for which I must apologize is forgetting to spell-check last week's submission. Misspelled words are a Nay Nay when writing a column and I should have known better. So to the one queen over 50 who actually took time to point those things out, I stand corrected…………..and your Mamma wears polyester!

Winter is officially over! Spring has begun and so has fun in the city of wind. March 20th Localsound presented "Recess Spring Breaks" with JohnEvolution, Tolgar, and Chris Gin down at the Big Wig on Division. This is the same crew that brings us Hard Candy at Big Wig . Saturday, March 22nd had Eric Daly upstairs at Domaine playing it live for the children while March 30th kicked off the return of GLAM Sundays at Domaine with Guest DJ's Tim Cleary and Tom McBride riding the turntables. Attendance was up and the crowd was cute. Hat's off to Jim Lewis who just got back from playing a gig at TWIST down in Florida over WMC weekend. Tuesday March 25th brought about a spring celebration of the Familia kind. Music 101 and S.O.S. entertainment gave us Cedric and Vince Lawrence at Minx on Hubbard St. The menu was Moroccan and the hookahs were loaded with ……fun. AHEM! Thursday March 27th had the cast of Pure at Transit had the release party for the movie "Party Monster" with hostess Jo-Jo. Chris Walsh, Frique, and John Curely tossed the turntable salad quite cute. Stopped by Red Dog on a Friday recently. (Don't we give them enough press?) Teri Bristol & Psycho Bitch were TEARING it up. Stopped up to see Mikey Steel in the Hi-Lounge too. Marlene of Mars Music Lab is starting a night at Cherry Red on Sheffield Ave called Soulful Sundays. Coming sometime in April, DJ's for this Sunday event are Timmy Loop and Freddie Bain.

Are you up for "old school" fun? I'm sending my troops down to Cans, 1640 N. Damen Ave. next week. What is Cans? From what the night crawlers tell MZ. Kii Kii, they have a jukebox with all 70's and 80's hits, old school video games (Centipede and Pac-Man), "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" and "Breakfast Club" being shown on TV's throughout, and your regular brew & pool fanfare. HOW RETRO!!! On April 5th DJ Timmy Tuna Loops will be playing songs along side the Chicago Kings at The Chicago Cultural Center for "Art & Activism". Also on the 5th, DJ Tom McBride plays the release party for Cher's Greatest Hits at Circuit. Well Kiddies, MZ Kii Kii's gotta run. If she's not in the coffin before day break……….

drama on the dance floor

by Chris Eterno  (read Chris' BIO)

Word from many in attendance at this year's Winter Music Conference is that the party of the weekend was Danny Tenaglia's bash at SPACE in Miami. Now that the conference is over, the new music is starting to trickle into the market again. Over this same weekend, the DanceStar USA Awards were held. Dirty Vegas cleaned house apparently, walking away with Best Commercial Song, Best Video, and Best Record of the Year. For a complete list of winners log onto www.DanceStarUSA.com. Chicago's own songstress Celeda is working out a deal to return to the label that launched her. She and Rob DiStefano are hammering out final details for her new album to be released on Twisted. Watch for her new single "Deep Around" with Mike Cruz to be released on this label as well as a slew of new work produced by some of the hottest names in dance music. "Who?" You ask? Unfortunately I'm not at liberty to give all that out yet, but I guarantee that fans won't be disappointed. Also on the home front, DJ Lego has a new cut called "It's All Over". Not shopped out to the labels yet, this track is all about Red Dog on Monday; House and up-lifting!

Brinca! Brinca para Ralphi! What has he been up to lately? It seems Ralphi Rosario has been tapped by Sex & The City to submit some original work for the show's last season. HOW SEXY!!! Daniel Bedingfield has a new cut out called "If You're Not The One". Remixes by the Passengerz give this a fun feel, while the flip-side of this track delivers slices from Mantese and from Seth Lawrence. The latter 2 mixes accent deep beats, synths and minimal vocals……..plus the song is just HOT! Peter Heller and Tedd Patterson team up on Junior records for "Big Room Drama". The Dramatized mix is just that…..big…..roomie and dramatic. It's a fun release. Fresh from the Winter Music Conference is a new release by Angelo Kortez called "It's the Sound". His High Voltage mix was all the rage down in Miami. Also fresh from WMC and just in time for spring is Kathy Brown's new single "Don't Give Up" on Defected Records. There are no other words to describe this song than Da Shit!!! The first set of mixes are from K-Klass and Mestre & Santos. This song is going to be her next big room carrier. Kathy will also be releasing a new cut called "Turn It Out" on J2X records. This new label is the love child of DJ Escape and Guido. (See Greg Drescher's interview). New on Hooj Choons is "Doubt" by 16B. Mixes sliced up by Omid, Brooks' Slickquick, and Flatlines. I'm personally digging the Flatlines Viva La Revolution mix.

Mz. Vaquez (Junior, that is) has been giving the club scene several delicacies on his label. Aptly called Junior Vasquez Music, the label gives us new cuts from Joi Cardwell and Vernessa Mitchell. Joi's "After the Rain" has a Junior Earth mix and Vernessa's new track is called "Serious". Junior delivers a Sunday Morning Early mix while the flipside of the vinyl has Junior's Earth Mix of Vernessa's classic "Issues". From Defected records this month comes Shakedown's "At Night", the 2003 re-mixes. Kid Cream and Jazz-N-Groove give us a modern slice on this tune. My personal favorite underground re-mixers Bini & Martini release "Say Yes" on Azuli Records this month also. This song features the musings of Su Su Bobien. What's new on Yoshitoshi records? Joystick has a new progressive track called "Spinnin' Around" and on the Yoshi offshoot label Shinichi serves up Envy with an E.P. called "The Faith". The Roc featuring Tina Arena releases "Never (Past Tense)" on Tommyboy records. "Never" is remixed by the Filterheads and DJ Tiesto. Also in stores now is "Star 69 Extended Mixes, Vol. 1 & 2" Picture your favorite *69 anthems from Celeda to the Magic Cucumbers all on 2 CDs. It's well worth the purchase. CLASSICS ALERT!!! Remember The Fog's anthem "Been A Long Time"? It's been re-done with a 2003 mix by the Hoxton Whores. Available now only as a white label, this re-dux is sickening. Lisa Stansfield's classic "Been All Around the World" has been re-mixed 2003 style by Nory Cotto. (win a Lisa Stanfield CD) Way cute!! And lastly, The Peace Division has reared its head again with a new cut of NRK music called "Beatz In Peacez". This track is a bit more groovy than their normal stuff and succeeds at keeping a dance floor. Onto reviews:

reviews

Roger Sanchez won re-mixer of the year and jumps out of the gate with a ferocious S-man re-mix of Artificial Funk's "Together" on Skint Records. The vocals of Nellie Ettison lay over S-man's snappy house/tribal lines perfectly. Somewhat haunting, this song moves you! Seamus Haji does an underground mix and dub that are cute too. Grade A !

Justin Timberlake's new cut "Rock Your Body" on Jive Records attempts to prove that J.T. can hang with the contemporary dance floor. He achieves this by enlisting Junior Vasquez, Sander Kleinenberg, and Paul Oakenfold to re-do this latest project. Junior's mix is standard Junior drama and Sander's mix is standard darkness. The mix that stands out is Oakenfold's house mix. A cute selection all the way around.

I personally haven't heard anything noteworthy from Love 2 Infinity in years. However, their new mixes of Stereopol's "Dancin' Tonight" (Rulin Records) prove me wrong. Their Master Mix has a filtered-disco feel as singer Nevada belts out uplifting lyrics. L2I's Club Mix is where it's at though. With a harder kick and snappy rhythm, the club mix dominates this release. Welcome back, Love 2 Infinity!

Debra Cooper's "Real Love" is on the Fireball CD that's been out for over a month, but this song is so hot I have to give it an individual review. Coming soon on Emerge records, it promises to be another chart topper for re-mixers Rosabel. Debra laments over a relationship based on material things when what she wants is real love. Rosabel work the vocals fiercely over tribal/progressive music that moves any dance floor. This tune has the flavor we crave!!!!

Deep, Dark and DIRTY!!! If you like your dance floor with that flavor, then Star 69's "If U Want Me" by Dark Clark is the jam for you. Airmail's Toxic mix delivers a very New York hard tribal kick with deep hard keys to make you move. This song tore up the Winter Music Conference and is the perfect segue to my next review: Do you remember her? The Size Queen? "I Am Ready" used to tear up Crobar's floor a couple years ago. This song has returned with a fierce double release on Star 69. New mixes grace this tune from DJ Vibe, Peter Rauhofer, Peter Bailey, and That Kid Chris. All of these new mixes stand out but my personal favorite is the Peter Bailey mix. Tribal is what it is, but Bailey's mix has a rich feel to it. Both tracks are currently available on Star 69
