Ya know, my Mamma used to say that if you
don't have anything nice to say……….sit your
ass over here and tell us all about it.
Memories….like the corners of my sketchy
mind. The recent warm weather we had brought
out all the children of gayland running
around looking all young a pretty. It
reminded me of days gone by. For example: Do
you remember Foxy's? Do you remember Triple
A Meat Market? Remember DEEKS? Or how about
Cairo and Quench Wednesdays at Shelter? The
Loading Dock? The Loading Zone? The L.A.
Connection? (or as we so fondly called it
The LA Staff Infection) How about The Rear
at The Riv? Or Vortex….BEFORE it became that

restaurant with a bar in the
back.. For the Latin queens, do you remember the
Normandy? Do you remember when Ralphi was a GLEE
club resident and Psycho-Bitch played House music
DEEP instead of HARD? Do y'all remember when Circuit
was a café or when MOM slung shots at the front bar
of Roscoe's with DAD? Do you remember when Berlin
and Sidetracks were less than ½ their current
size….and you still didn't mind going in there? And
lastly………..'member THE UNICORN?!?!?!? It goes by a
much steamier name now. |

The following people are fierce this week, just
because we said so: Lisa L, J.J., Lady J, A.K., PDL,
Ralphi (he's always fierce), Freddie (ditto), Gino,
Daniel T, Jeff W & the other Jeff W, Mike Serafini,
and both Gregs - Drescher & Haus. The following
people aren't fierce, NOT SO MUCH: ……………..YEA,
right! Like the editor would actually let me publish
that list. We would lose advertising dollars faster
than Bush is loosing allies. Erasure was in town
performing a couple of Monday's back. Seems that
after the show, The band and their entourage
sauntered over to Red
Dog's Boom Boom Room and had a cocktail and a
chat with MZ Freddie Bain. Freddie, did you get any
free records out of the deal? Friday March 7th saw
Dave Ralph performing in town. Some of the children
of the night reported back that it was alternative
and fun. March 11th had Music 101's Familia hosting
"Viva Spaniards" with Cedric and Lego at Minx.
Estuve mucho pasando alli'!!! Let's chalk one up for
the Lesbians! BIG GODDESS NATION, the return of your
favorite goddesses, hits
Circuit Night Club
on March 27- 29th. Also at Circuit on April 19th
will be the KINSEY SICKS. They are dubbed as
America's favorite dragapella beauty shop quartet.
Upon strolling into Marshal Fields State Street back
on March 15th, what did MZ Kii Kii Spy? Keith Ware
behind the decks playing his heart out! Apparently
he escaped his captors at the loony bin and got away
long enough to throw down a set for some promotion
they were having there. Live MZ Ware! LIVE!!! St.
Patty's day saw Greg D up in Milwaukee for a T dance
and closing set. Word on the street is that it was
quite fun. Even Sauci dipped her head in for
support. |

Lotsa new stuff coming our way with the warm
weather: Dick's Radio Lounge will be opening this
month at 2625 N. Halsted St. and promises……of all
things…..rock music in the mix. Harry's Velvet Room
downtown on Illinois Street has picked up Chicago
producer Matt Warren for a Saturday residency. This
in conjunction with Jesse De La Pena's Fridays are
making Harry's a viable candidate for FUN. The crew
from Spundae brought us Danny Howells again on March
15th. Seems they will also be hosting a "Red" party
on March 29th with DJ's Woddy McBride (any relation
to Tom?) and Brad Owen. Also on the 15th, Tom
McBride had the sisters of the Circuit persuasion
way living. March 22nd had Greg D doing the same
with the Circuit gals. Hugo returns to his thrown at
the big C on March 29th too. Smartbar gave us Miles
Maeda back on March 22nd to the delight of many.
Word is the party was a good mix of boyz and girls.
GLAM Sundays go back into operation this month, now
with a 4am license at Domaine. Lego will be throwing
is down and around at SuperLounge on March 28th for
the kids of House persuasion. March 27th kicks off
Le Passage's Thursday night called RUSH with "Chick
Flick" hosted by Rebekah. Opening DJ for this event
is Martin Luna. Chicago's Green Velvet will be at
Zentra on March 29th as part of a PURE promotion.
Speaking of PURE, they bring us Seb Fontaine on
April 4th and Timo Maas on April 25th at the House
of Blues. Well, it's time to put on some moisturizer
and hit the street while the warm weather lasts. Taa
Taa for now, kids! |

Poking through my record bag doesn't bring me much
excitement this week again. Keep in mind this
article went to press before Winter Music Conference
so I should have more for you all next issue. Duncan
Sheik's new single "On A High" on Atlantic Records
is way cute with a toss up by Westway that is moving
crowds on the floor. Jody Lei released a track
"Showdown" a couple of months ago with mixes by John
Ciafone. They were ……well……ok. Now come the Malcolm
Duffy Mixes of this single. Who is this Duffy
Character and where has he been hiding? These mixes
are hot and the dub has more energy & funk than any
of the other versions to date. New on the
Underground Music Movement label is a remake of "I
Want Your Sex" by Soho Boy. Mixes by Pagano make
this a fun remake with snap! MADONNA MADONNA
MADONNA!! - You all know that "American Life" is her
new single, but now word is that in Miami they will
be having an official release party for the Maverick
album. Watch for mixes from Peter Rauhofer, Felix Da
Housecat & Roger Sanchez for the single of the same
name. Circuit sisters are living for 2 releases this
issue: #1 - Tedd Patterson's "Magnifique" and #2- a
limited pressing of Rosabel's mix of Rise Up.
Patterson's track, on Fluential records, is not a
remake but a re-release from 2 years ago. What makes
this time around different are the new Chus &
Ceballos mixes. Way heavy and way deep, it is
slammin' floors across the city. Star 69 has
released a limited pressing of "Rise Up" with the
Rosabel mix on one side and the dirty Oscar G Space
Dub on the flipside. Both mixes are by far superior
to the rest, but c'mon people……..been there and done
that: let's put this track to bed already. I've
mentioned Who Da Funk's "Sting Me Red" in this
column but now come the Antranig mixes on SUBUSA
label. Check this mix out. If this song charts it's
going to be because of this version. David Guetta
features Barbara Tucker on a new double pack from
Virgin Records: "Give Me Something" and "It's
Allright". 'Something' is remixed by Antoine
Clamaran, and 'Allright' is done by Bob Sinclair. |
|
Sondos records gives us back to back releases this
month. Kobbe & Fabb'X deliver "The Abyss", which is
a progressive house wet dream, and Antranig
featuring Angelica De No give us "Dangerous" with
remixes by J-Groove & Ludikris. On the House tip,
Deep Swing & Jazz Transit toss up "Steppin' Out".
New mixes on this track come from DJ John Knight and
the Audiowhores. Moody Records (from Chicago) banged
out Cricco Castelli's Phunky Mafia E.P. The track to
hear on this E.P. is Jazz Revenge which uses the
drum loop from "Disco Down". Lastly, Full Intention
teams up with Shena again on Essence Records for
"Your Day Is Coming". This follow up to "I'll Be
Waiting" is Da Bomb!!! Working its way to vinyl
soon, but not quite yet, is Alma Matris's new single
"Rapido". I have heard this track and it's
definitely a slammer. Singer Jay-J (not to be
confused with the remixer J.J from the west coast)
will be performing his new cut "automatic lover" at
Winter music and coming April 29th should be a slew
of dance remixes for this track. New on Yoshitoshi
are Dave from Dallas with "Come To Me Baby" and my
personal Prog. House favorites Swain & Snell with "Travelling"
and "Floods of Water". S & S deliver an original and
dub mix that are way living. King Street records
will be celebrating a 10 year anniversary at WMC
this year too with a party at the Opium Garden in
Miami Beach. They have been nominated for "record
label of the year" once again and are quite happy
about it. |

Jody Watley has come a
long way from her 70's group Shalamar. Dance, Pop,
then Dance again, her new Album "Midnight Lounge"
on Avid Music is just that: All the lounge you
can handle. It's not exactly dance, but not exactly
new age jazz. It's a hybrid, and it works quite well
for your chill out sessions. Songs like Whenever and
Photographs deliver a Housey- lounge feel, whereas
tunes such as Skin Deep and Clouds deliver slow R &
B Flavor. Jody herself and Rodney Lee produced this
album and I feel they succeed. For those on the
CHILL tip, pick this up. |

The Weekend Players' new album
"Pursuit of Happiness" on Multiply records
hit stores March 11th. This group's music is
combination of Sade meets Everything But the Girl,
with a dash of Sia thrown. It is funky adult
contemporary that is smooth but not boring.
Downtempo tracks such as "Best Days of Our Lives",
"Jericho", and "Angel" really give listeners a feel
for Rachel Foster's hypnotic and smooth vocals. She
allows you to feel her words. More uptempo tracks
such as "21st Centurty" and "Pursuit of Hapiness"
give us a tighter musical feel than most new age
releases. Good vocals + good production = success. |

By now I'm sure most of you
have heard of The Cooler Kids' "Punk Debutant".
Their L.P by the same name on DreamWorks immediately
brought to mind an image of cotton candy dance. But
if you're at the carnival, isn't cotton candy nice
every once in a while? Although my press sheet
doesn't credit the vocalist's name, she does a good
job at delivering some snappy fun music. Producer
Pop Rox succeeds at combining dance elements with
mainstream appeal to make this a fun album. Check
out tracks "Morning Star" and "Viva La Fever". You
can pick up this release April 22nd at most music
outlets. |
