A quick note everyone: This page went to
press before Fireball was finished, so check
back next issue for MZ Kii Kii's Burnin'
Firepussy review. |
|
Hey kids! What is up in the town of cows and
corruption? This is MZ Kii Kii, the love
child of Cha Cha and Danny (go rent the
movie, you'll figure it out!) Our
condolences out to the family of Stefano
Alvera', owner of Domaine, on his passing
recently. Domaine is a part of the kick that
Chicago's nightlife needs and we do hope
that this doesn't change the club's activity
or halt operations in any way down at the
big "D". Spundae met Pure on January 11th
with turntable masterings by John Curly
(Pure Chicago) and Scumfrog from New York -
The kids report that this party was WAY
cute. "Thank God almighty, free at last!"
The Martin Luther King Day party featuring
the turntable wings of David Moralez and
Frankie Knuckles was without a doubt the
best party Chicago has seen in a while. This
is what the party scene SHOULD be about: Fun
music, people of all colors, drag queens,
circuit queens, straight, you name it
all
in one room throwing it fiercely. |

It's rare to walk into any club
nowadays and see people actually smiling at one
another and getting along. A "who's who" of industry
people were spotted throughout the evening: Satoshi,
Ralphi, Maurice
We thought we saw R. Kelley, but
needless to say he was busy becoming acquainted with
cell block C at Florida Correctional. |
|
Music 101 @ Minx brought Chicago's Byron Stingly to
the stage on January 23rd. He sang some of his Ten
City classics for the children and word is it was
smooth and fun. Tom McBride served it hot and spicy
for Boi Magazine's 3rd Anniversary party at
Excalibur on January 26th. DATELINE FEBRUARY 2ND:
Daleyville saw mucho hapennins' on the 2nd with
International DJ Greg Drescher (see below) spinning
another Phoenix Nightlife event at Exaclibur. Mark
Vallese threw the sounds around at Cellblock with
the Beer Bust featuring the Fireball Boys and lastly
Smartbar hosted the turntable trio/ re-mixers Dirty
Vegas. INTERNATIONAL DJ GREG DRESCHER?!?! After
spinning the Heart's Sunday event in the lounge at
Excalibur, Greg will be jetting off to play in
Isreal with the likes of Victor Calderone and Peter
Rauhofer. Glad to see a local gal make is over seas.
Happy Birthday, Bitch!!!! Psycho-Bitch and Teri
Bristol dice it Hard and House at the Rainbo, 4836
N. Clark on February 6th for the Bitch Birthday
Bash. February 7th sees west coast house DJ Dan team
up with Derrick Carter @ House of Blues. |

What local DJ had the pleasure of being
tapped recently to mix Barbara Tucker's dance hits
compilation for the Winter Music Conference? We
aren't giving any names (Jeremy) but we hear his
Saturday sets at Cocktail are tits and ass!!! From
the files of DRAMA FO' YO' MAMMA: An certain
re-mixer's private stash of music recently ended up
on the net and word on the vine is that he's none
too happy about it. Do you blame him? How would you
like NOT to get paid for the fruits of your labor?
Remember children that even though "everyone's doing
it", downloading music without paying for it is
still illegal. On a Monday's eve recently Lisa
Lexus, J. J. and the Children all showed up at Felt
on a whim. Within a couple of minutes, the stage was
theirs and fabulous performances ensued. Have we
ever mentioned exactly how fierce J. J. is? VERY
THAT WAY! Miami + Winter = FUN. Just a reminder to
the Chi-gals: The 10th annual Winter Party
approaches March 1st - 10th. For the musically
inclined, the 18th annual Winter Music Conference
kicks off March 18th - 22nd. Until next time
children, remember to moisturize properly!!!! |

quick chat:
DJ Jim Belanger |
|
|
 |
|
|
Where do you currently play? |
|
Right now I'm the Music Director at
Domaine, located at 1045 N. Rush St.
I spin there every Monday and
Saturday. I also have a residency at
Sugar every Tuesday. |
 |
|
How
long have you been a DJ? |
|
I started back in 1984 as a way to
make mix tapes for myself and
buddies. I got my first paying gig
in 1986 and my first club residency
in 1989. |
 |
|
What was your first gig ever? |
|
Playing at a fraternity party on
University of Michigan's campus. |
 |
|
How
would you describe your style? |
|
I like to stay as true to the
underground as I can. At some clubs
I have total freedom with how I want
to express myself. I sometimes have
to play more for the crowd than for
myself (it took me a while before I
learned that lesson). |
 |
|
What is one of your favorite labels? |
|
My favorite label is Yoshitoshi.
Deep Dish and Danny Tenaglia are
still my favorite re-mixers. |

Some new tunes and such around this past month:
"Spirit of the Boogie" by Spirit of the boogie hit
streets last week on Junior Records. S.O.B. is Terry
Farley and Chris Bangs for those not in the know.
Japanese dance recording artist SEIKO let's us have
it "Just For Tonight" on Hip-O records. Redux on
this tune by Chicago's own Mark Picciotti. Cher
delivers deep sounds with her re-make of "When the
Money's Gone" on Warner Brothers. An unreleased mix
by Manny Lehman is the early favorite for MZ Cher,
but local gal Thick Dick (AKA E-Smoove) gives us a
vocal and dub that are House and fun. Whitney
Houston's new track "Try It On My Own" on Arista
records gets the once-over from Thundershmootz.
Thunderpuss has been letting us have it lately with
some serious remix work: Leanne Rymes' "Tic Toc" on
Curb Records, a re-make of Happy Clapper's "I
Believe" on Provocative Records, Barry's "S-Cream"
on Nervous records, and "Head" currently a promo
release.
I hope all of you have gone out and picked up
Centaur's Fireball CD. Rosabel have outdone
themselves with this release. A must have! AND THE
NOMINEES ARE: Re-mixer of the year nominees have
landed: Maurice Joshua, Felix Da House Cat, Steve
Silk Hurley, Roger Sanchez, and Jay Jay. The first 3
re-mixers listed are originally Chicago boys and
also note that all these re-mixers are of the House
Music persuasion. Log on to
www.grammy.com for a list of all the category
nominees. IIO's "At The End" hits stores this week
on Made records with hair style by Scumfrog, Saeed &
Palesh, and Johnny Vicious. Singer Colein's new cut
"Lean On Me" on Upstream Records graces us this week
featuring chop ups by Mauve and Bluestone. Smilez &
Southstar's "Tell Me" on Artist Direct Records hits
the floor running with retouch by Boris & Beck this
month. Defected Record's "The Beat Goes On" by Bob
Sinclair finally makes it to the U.S.A. with a carve
out by Antoine Clamaran. For you Danny-heads out
there, Azuli Records has released "Choice- A
Collection of Classics" hand picked by the Tenaglia
himself. One tends to forget how long Danny has been
around until you pick up this release and hear some
of the classics he chooses for this compilation. |
|
From the Miami underground comes a remake by ELEC-TRICK
called "No Way Back". I still have the original
version by Adonis from 1986 in a record crate at my
mamma's house. Albert Camara (AKA Obadam) teams up
with Michael M for this re-did. Mixes by Mike Da
Mooch (Circuit boy). For a sample of this track, log
on to www.amplituderecords.com. Christina Aguilera's
"Beautiful" on RCA comes out this month with slice
up by Al B. Rich, and Peter Rauhofer. J-Ho's "All I
Have" hits the airwaves with re-mixes by DJ Spyder.
Don't forget to cast your votes at
www.dancestarusa.com for the Dance Star Awards
coming up around Winter Music Conference time. Your
favorite DJ's and Re-mixers are listed there with a
plethora of categories from which to choose.
Yoshitoshi Records is on fire this month. New
releases from them include Behrouz's "Azab" (Fierce
tribal cut), Paris & Healey's "Ripped", Royksopp's "Eple",
Thomas Penton's "Lock-Up" and Gene Carbonell's
"Beating Off". |

Nervous records releases a cute
tribute to Queer as Folk called "Queer as Nervous."
You guessed it: a mix CD with all of QAF's songs
that belong to the New York Label. Circuit classics
such as Bumpin' N Jumpin' & Everyday (Kim English),
U Turn Me (Byron Stingley), and Movin' Up (Inaya
Day) line this CD. If you are looking for a type of
"Circuit Classics" CD, then pick this up. Hits
streets March 5th. |

|
Mike Da Mooch's (A.K.A. The
CircuitBoy) latest CD compilation "Electrified
Club Mix" on Harlequin Records gives us fierce
tracks from Ad Finem (If You Fall), Chynna (Deeper),
and Problematic (Electrify Me). Miami's underground
music is more progressive than Chicago's underground
music and Mooch's selection exemplifies this. Me
like the sound of the underground and me love what
"Electrified Club" does with it. |
|
|
|
Also on Harlequin is Midnight
Society Featuring Alan T with "Space Jam".
His song has been out for a while but new comer
Angelo Kortez from D.C. adds some spice to this
soup. His mixes have a Latin tinged tribal funk that
is the perfect build up for main floor bliss.
Kortez's mixes are the cream of this crop. |
|
|
|
The Dirty Vegas Sound System
releases "A Night At The Tables" on Ultra
records. This is a mix compilation with some really
fierce tracks such as Oscar G's "Dark Beat", Del
Gado's "Coffee Beats", Sany Rivera's "Change" and
Celeda's "Be Yourself". The mixing is seamless with
cute acapellas layered throughout. D.V. definitely
succeeds at delivering an underground-progressive
combo with some flair. |
