If you’re looking for a homey
neighborhood bar with an eclectic décor, an
interesting variety of music, and a clientele to
match, then Big Chicks is the bar for you. Though it
is alone on N. Sheridan Rd, Big Chicks draws people
from all over the city as well as from Boystown, and
the up and coming gay areas on the north side,
Edgewater and Andersonville. On weeknights, the
crowds are smaller, and it is a perfect place to
hang out and socialize. On weekends, the bar can be
crowded and circulating a little difficult, though
the atmosphere is still friendly and welcoming.
Particularly popular is the free buffet on Sunday
afternoons, with crowds remaining well into the
evening. Big Chicks also has a number of free
parking spaces behind the bar and in a lot across
the alley, a big plus on Chicago’s congested north
side. |

The long, narrow storefront space
is divided into several distinct areas. The main
room is dominated by the bar, which runs along one
wall. There are also several tables spread
throughout. Off to one side is the salon, a smaller,
more intimate space with additional seating, a dart
machine, and a dance floor that is used on the
weekends, with live DJs from Thursday through
Saturday evenings. Toward the back of the main bar
is small room, which is almost completely filled by
a small pool table. Covering the walls of the bar is
Michelle Fire’s wonderful collection of photography
and art. An interesting mix of styles and mediums,
it is definitely worth checking out. Behind the bar
is a patio, which is a popular hangout when the
weather is warmer. |
